Why Handmade Soy Candles Beat Mass Produced Ones...Every time

Why Handmade Soy Candles Beat Mass Produced Ones...Every time

We'll be honest with you. From across a shop, most candles look much the same. A jar, a wick, a label. So it's a fair thing to wonder, and plenty of people type it into Google word for word: aren't all candles basically the same?

The short answer is no. And the difference has very little to do with how a candle looks, and everything to do with how it's made. So here's the honest version, from the people (us) who actually pour them.

Aren't all candles basically the same?

On the surface, yes. Underneath, not even close.

A mass produced candle is built to be made quickly and cheaply, often thousands at a time, by a machine that never smells a single one. A handmade candle is made in small batches by actual people who do. That one difference quietly shapes everything else that matters: the wax, the fragrance, the burn, and the way it makes a room feel.

It starts with the wax

Most mass produced candles use paraffin, because it's cheap and quick to work with. We've only ever used 100% sustainable soy wax, and we do it on purpose.

Soy burns slower and cleaner, so you get a longer, more even burn with far less soot, and it comes from a renewable, plant based source rather than a fossil fuel. A good soy candle should burn beautifully all the way down to the bottom, and ours are made to do exactly that.

The fragrance is where the corners get cut

Here's a little industry secret. Fragrance oil is the most expensive part of a candle, so it's usually the first thing a cheaper brand will skimp on. That's why a bargain candle can smell wonderful in the shop, then barely fill a room once you get it home.

We don't cut that corner. We use a generous concentration of luxuriously rich, toxin free fragrance oils, so our candles do what a candle is actually for, which is fill your whole home with something gorgeous. You should be able to tell one of ours is lit the moment you walk through the door.

Every single one is poured by hand in Northern Ireland

There's no factory line here. Every candle is poured, set, labelled and checked by hand by our small team in Northern Ireland, and we test every scent properly before it ever reaches you, so what lands on your doorstep performs exactly the way it should.

It takes longer this way, of course. But it means real hands and a real pair of eyes touch every candle before it becomes yours, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

A story you can't mass produce

This is the part no machine can copy. Every one of our scents begins with a real memory. A garden in summer. A walk along the north coast. A quiet morning with the orangery doors thrown open. That story is then printed onto an individually designed, hand illustrated and gold foiled box.

So when you pick up an Olivia's Haven candle, you're not holding a generic jar. You're holding a little piece of a story, which is exactly why they make such lovely gifts.

Don't just take our word for it

We could tell you all of this ourselves, but we'd rather let our customers. We're proud to hold a 4.9 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot, we've been featured in the Telegraph, the Daily Express, Hello and Good Housekeeping, and some of our loveliest customers have come back to reorder more than seventy times. You don't return that often for a candle that's just like all the others.

So, are they worth it?

Only you can really answer that, but here's our honest take. A handmade soy candle costs a little more because more goes into it. Better wax. More fragrance. Real craft. And a story worth keeping long after the candle has burned down. You feel all of it the moment you light one.
